Elan Dams with the taps on!

02nd January 2014
What a Grand Day!!!

Initial thoughts were to hit the Spa town of Llandrindod wells and get the waterfalls and sculptures which are so enchanting. However on the journey there it suddenly came to me that we have had a tremendous amount of water recently and with that surely the dams would be overflowing. So after a swift consultation with a friend and fellow photographer out for the day with me, who had never fully driven the Elan before, we decided for a brief stop to get the waterfall and a cup of coffee in Llandrindod wells then move on to the Elan Valley.

O WOW!!!!

I have never been through this valley and seen every single dam working full on. Such a shame we were losing light rapidly! Even so I drove round the whole valley to just have a wrecky for where to go back and sure enough it will be worth another trip whilst the storms are pounding our fair Isle.

The first dam we came to was Cabon Coch Dam and water was roaring over the dam, the noise was simply deafening. I had to give up wiping the lens of spray and just shoot. I have never seen so much water coming over. It was both magnificent and terrifying at the same time. Freezing cold and barely able to see through spray, my hands were blocks of ice in minutes! I think I have managed to get a few that will show the power of such a force of water. I will post some later in the galleries and on my FB Page.

This was the sight that met us when we arrived, as the suns final rays hit the dam before cloud cover took over. Tough choice rainbow of the purest light one direction over the car parks surrounding hills or the stunning light play on the water the dam end. I went for the water light. Steve went for the rainbow.

So many to choose from but this I think being the first we saw as we pulled in has to be the one. Great start to the year a day trip through my favourite valley with all the taps turned full on. Big Smiley Day!!!!

Thanks to Steve for being a very patient passenger and suffering the extra long trip with severe back pain. The things we do for art hey ;)
